Oil Pastel
Oil pastels are of different types and different uses depending upon the work and hence the range. Oil pastel is a painting and drawing medium formed into a stick which consists of pigment mixed with a binder mixture of non-drying oil and wax, in contrast to other pastel sticks which are made with a gum or methylcellulose binder, and in contrast to wax crayons which are made without oil. Oil pastels can be used directly in dry form; when done lightly, the resulting effects are similar to oil paints. Heavy build-ups can create an almost impasto effect. Once applied to a surface, the oil pastel pigment can be manipulated with a brush moistened in white spirit, turpentine, linseed oil, or another type of vegetable oil or solvent. Alternatively, the drawing surface can be oiled before drawing or the pastel itself can be dipped in oil. Some of these solvents pose serious health concerns. What Are Oil Pastels?
Oil pastels are made up of a pigment that is held together by linseed oil. Oil Pastels have an oily consistency that produces a painterly effect. The nature of oil pastels allows the artist to work them in a similar way to paint. Thus, a finished oil pastel drawing has many of the characteristics of a finished painting. Many people consider pastel a painting medium, even though the process of applying the medium is clearly drawing.

Oil pastels are a unique drawing/painting medium for creating color art. Because of their unique characteristics, many artists choose to use them over other color media. Oil pastels behave in a similar fashion to traditional soft pastels, but they also possess characteristics that are similar to that of crayons.
Similarities to Crayons
Oil pastels can behave like wax-based crayons when they are initially laid on the drawing surface. Typically, the desired end result for the artist is not a “crayon-Esque” drawing, however. Luckily, as layers are added, the medium becomes more buttery and behaves in a similar fashion to paint.
